Breevy has gone quiet — here's how to keep your abbreviations

Breevy, the Windows text expander by 16 Software, hasn't shipped an update since early 2024 and has been stuck mid-rebrand since. It may keep running for now, but building your daily typing on dormant software is a gamble — especially when Windows updates or antivirus rules change under it.

KeySim is an actively maintained Windows text expander with the same spirit: type a short abbreviation, get the full text in any program. It imports your Breevy abbreviations directly via Breevy's built-in TextExpander export, so you keep everything you built.

Move from Breevy to KeySim in three steps

  1. In Breevy, choose File → Export All Abbreviations to TextExpander Snippet File and save the file (Breevy names it Settings.textexpander).
  2. Install KeySim and choose Import… from the tray menu or main window.
  3. Pick the exported file. KeySim reads the TextExpander format directly — abbreviations, replacement text, labels and even use counts come across. Review the preview, click Import, done.

Breevy's AutoCorrect-style entries import too — they're just abbreviations. Script-based snippets (rare in Breevy) are flagged in the preview rather than silently dropped.

Frequently asked questions

Is Breevy discontinued?

16 Software has not formally discontinued it, but Breevy has received no updates since early 2024 and its announced rebrand has not shipped. In practice it is dormant: no fixes for new Windows builds, no support certainty, no signed installer.

Will my Breevy abbreviations work in KeySim?

Yes. Export them from Breevy with File → Export All Abbreviations to TextExpander Snippet File and import that file into KeySim — abbreviations, text, labels and use counts are preserved. Trigger behaviour (expand immediately vs. after a delimiter) is configurable per snippet after import.

Does KeySim have Breevy's AutoCorrect?

KeySim expands abbreviations the same way; a bundled AutoCorrect dictionary pack is on the roadmap. Your own correction pairs import today like any other abbreviation.

Is KeySim free?

KeySim has a full-featured free 30-day trial (no card, no account). After that it's a one-time purchase — Personal $29, Pro $49 — including a year of updates.
